All three settings possible create an error message that I eventually just ignored and pressed on. Had to reduce the com3 baud rate (under "file") but that takes a leap of faith. The hint was keep rebooting the computer and resolving conflicts until COM 3 could be assigned without a conflict.

Error messages and help integrated into the software was not much help but the cryptic one page word document on the CD did help some. Had to temporarily uninstall optical mouse and anything else that might have conflicted with com port #3.
